Esterman visual field test for driving
The DVLA Visual Field Test
Certain eye conditions need to be disclosed to DVLA. It’s important to get your eyes tested on a regular basis, especially if you drive frequently. Make sure you meet the binocular visual field standards set by the DVLA.
If you have disclosed a certain eye condition to the DVLA, they may require you to take a visual field test to ensure your vision is strong enough and meets the ‘standards of vision for driving’. One of the ways the DVLA can assess this is using the Esterman test. It’s quick, straightforward and is designed to make sure you have an adequate field of vision. At Gilroy Opticians in Belfast, we can carry out the test and provide you with the required paperwork and can have a look at your prescription if necessary.

What to Expect
The test itself is very straightforward and only takes around 30 minutes to complete. Simply bring your driving glasses with you, look into the machine and respond when you see the small flashing lights. Once you’ve completed the test, we’ll provide you with all the documentation that the DVLA needs.
Do I Have to Take the Test?
The DVLA may ask you take the test if you have an eye condition such as:
This includes different conditions in each eye.
