When it comes to near tasks such as reading and computers there can be more than one solution.
You could have dedicated single vision lenses specifically for reading or computer usage but not effective for distance. This choice would be perfect if your distance vision was good.
However, if not, then there are bifocals and varifocals.
Bifocals allow you to read through the lower portion of the lens and to see the distance with the upper portion. They are fixed focus so things have to be at a certain distance to see comfortably, especially at near.
Varifocals, can however, give you a range of vision. As an example if you hold a floor brush you can see your hands, the shaft and the brush head. This is variable focus i.e varifocals. They give a more natural experience.
